It's kind of ridiculous, but I finally got one of my exams back from last quarter...and found out that I totally bombed it. Not exactly an encouraging way to start out the new year. In my defense, the class was basically impossible to follow, seeing as how four different professors traded teaching duties on and off, there were no office hours of any sort, and we were never given any feedback/solutions on anything in the course.
...Remind me again how I'm supposed to learn in a vacuum?
That aside, the PDE class today went alright. Professor is the chair of the math department and is really quite friendly (maybe it was just a fluke that all the math profs I had in my old school were jerks). He says one of his colleagues will ask the class if they have any questions, then stand there until everyone gets uncomfortable enough with the silence that they HAVE to say something XD. Fortunately, he didn't do that to us (yet). The content of the course is definitely useful and should be interesting, since I've encountered PDEs all over the place, but never had a formal theory class. I'll stick around for awhile to see if I can handle the workload along with all my other requirements (I've got game theory, metrics II, and a seminar that I actually have to do some writing for u_u).
Before psets eat up my entire life, let me take a step back to describe the fannish things I was involved in over break. I got a hold of Assassin's Creed after watching some of the trailers and drooling over Altair's hidden blade assassinations XD believe me, walking up to Templars and knifing them in the throat never gets old. Also, climbing the lovely buildings scattered around Jerusalem, Acre, etc is a real treat for the eyes...I always have to hunt down all the synchronization spots when I visit a new sector of a city. The gameplay does get repetitive after awhile, and I particularly hate the idiotic flag collecting mini games (seriously, who came up with that? I'm an assassin, not your lackey!), but the thrill of taking out high-profile figures pushes me on. Let me say that having played too many one-man army type characters, I got my ass pummeled a bit in combat at the beginning DX; but slowly, I'm getting the hang of countering and using throwing knives to my advantage. In the fake Robert de Sable assassination, I literally climbed up a tall spot and just kept pushing people off until they all died LOL. Totally cheap, but effective! The controls can be annoying, though. I can't switch between sword and hidden blade quickly enough to take down enemies when they're on the ground (particularly the fake de Sable...that was really frustrating). Oh, and after this mission is over? I totally need to knife a beggar lady/crazy dude in the back. Even though I'll lose life bars, it still gives me satisfaction after they fuck up my pickpocket or trip me up for the millionth. Haven't finished the game yet; since my PS3's at home, I don't expect to until my next extended break...however, I am already looking forward to getting Assassin's Creed II when I'm done.
Also, the yaoi fan in me totally sees a bit of Altair/Malik from their conversations ^___^ especially when they make up after the last Jerusalem mission.
Secondly, I've been a little obsessed with Mark Strong's character in Body of Lies, Hani Salaam. Ah, yes. Hani. What is there to say about Hani? Well, for one, he's incredibly hot:
For another, he's impeccably dressed. And most importantly, he's a Seme (tm) with a capital S. Yes, Hani Salaam is the head of Jordanian intelligence, and he's basically the only competent person in the entire film. Ed Hoffman is a jackass, Roger Ferris is well-meaning but does plenty of fucked up things (such as framing an innocent architect as a terrorist, which ultimately leads him to be murdered), and all the lackeys can't tell their heads from their behinds. But Hani? He tracks down terrorists single-handedly WHILE looking like he walked off the cover of GQ. (In an interview, Mark said they borrowed all the suits from this incredibly expensive boutique, where the going price starts around $4,000).
That isn't to say that he's a Gary Stu. In fact, he is duped by Roger's retarded architect plan, and this angers him greatly. Actually, most of the CIA's impotent meddling angers him greatly, as it would any mildly intelligent Homo Sapien, although he rarely shows this in the film. I do love one exchange he had with Roger, in which the latter confesses he made up some information that is now seriously screwing him up the ass. Hani replies, "That's impossible" and Roger asks, "Why?" to which Hani responds, "Because that would mean you sat in my office and you lied to my face." LOL, the scene's not supposed to be funny, but the way Mark delivers the line makes me go Ohhhh SNAP.
But anyway, the main reason I'm a little obsessed with him is because Hani and Roger have some serious UST going on in the film. Hani constantly calls Roger, "my dear" and the two enjoy an almost mentor-mentee relationship (because Roger's real boss, Ed Hoffman, is a jackass whom Roger has little respect for). Secondly, Hani visits Roger in the hospital after the latter is almost killed in an operation that Hani covertly ordered, and says, "You can always tell who cares about you the most by who comes first to visit you in the hospital." He smirks just a little, then continues, "And I believe I am the first." Needless to say, Roger is less than amused XDDDDD. Finally, there's a scene at the end of the movie that was unfortunately deleted, in which Hani gives Roger some advice for courting his lady friend (who really has nothing to do with the story other than to provide the token Hollywood romance that, frankly, is not very romantic given the utter lack of chemistry between the two).
Hehehe figs XD I'm sure there's something pervy I can make out of that! Anyway, there are too many cultural, political, and religious barriers - not to mention Hani is married with children - to write a serious relationship between the two, but I definitely want to play up the UST if I ever get around to scribbling some Hani/Roger slash XD.
I am also waiting impatiently for a decent cam or perhaps even a screener of Sherlock Holmes to come out. The ones currently floating around are really crap quality, and I want something good enough that I can make graphics out of, as well as rewatching my fave scenes. Until then, Blackwood/Holmes will have to sit in the back of my mind somewhere...
Oh, and I saw Up in the Air. Good film, definitely relevant to the times, but didn't leave that lasting of an impression, perhaps due to the ambiguity of the ending. It's more a character study than a social commentary. I was looking around the library for the Walter Kirn book, but it seems someone has already beaten me to it. Ah, well. Maybe another time.

Dear Rude guy sitting next to my boyfriend in the movie theater,
Thanks for keeping your cell phone out for the entire movie. I sure did enjoy being distracted by your ultra bright cell phone in a very dark theater. Even when my boyfriend asked you nicely to put it away, you said OKAY and kept it out.
Oh, and thank you for stealing our popcorn too. (The boyfriend had it by his feet because we were done with it for a little while) You basically set your popcorn down next to our bag, then grabbed both bags and stuck your nasty hand into both bags and asked, "which one is yours?" to which my boyfriend responded, "You can have it. I don't want it back." And you poured our bag into your bag and munched (loudly) away.
Also, thanks to you and your nasty friends for talking through out the entire movie. Sure, I loved listening to you and your friends chat, you know, cause I didn't pay money to see a movie or anything.
Oh, and next time you wonder what time it is, don't ask my boyfriend. Look at your phone. After all, you had it out the entire time.
Next time, learn proper etiquette on how to sit through a movie.
